Curtain up, film on
For one day the WDR will accompany
Like almost every day, I pick up my smartphone, open the Instagram app and look in my mailbox. A very special message was waiting for me. Katja – author for the show „Animals looking for a home“ would like to shoot an article about the verpinscht-family. Immediately I was incredibly excited and arranged a phone call with Katja. Soon I would learn more…
Be accompanied by a television team for one day. A situation that I never thought I would have the chance to experience. Of course it should be primarily about the dogs and that is also good: Because I don’t like the spotlight.) After a nice phone call I knew how to fill the article with content. In the show „Tiere suchen ein Zuhause“ there is a small spin-off called „Zuhause gefunden“. This is about animal protection dogs that have already found a home. So in the show Rafael and I will tell how we came to Mojo, Rana and Mateo and how life is with three animal protection dogs. When Katja asked me this question, I answered immediately with: „Chaotic. With us it never gets boring.“ 😀
At 10 o’clock is the start of shooting. The doorbell rings punctually. The evening before I asked Mojo not to bark when the doorbell rings. This is what he – typically a dwarf pinscher – likes to do. As if he wanted to say: „Hey mummy, the doorbell rang. I heard it first, just wanted to let you know.“ And, in fact, he didn’t bark. So I was very grateful to him. That’s another quality of Mojo, by the way, that I really appreciate about him: When it comes to sausage, you can always depend on the little dwarf pinscher man. The WDR team consisting of three men comes in. Of course the dogs are welcomed first – we don’t know any other way 😉
The team and Katja get a guided tour through our little Hobbit-house. So they could get an insight about possible locations within our four walls. We started in the living room. To give the dogs (and secretly me) a chance to get used to the new situation, a few cuddling scenes were shot. The dogs were actually like always: They cuddled together in their basket and also played. I was very happy about that – this way the audience got a real insight into our family. When we all relaxed, a so-called original sound, i.e. an interview, followed. I was allowed to tell what makes Mojo, Rana and Mateo so special and how we got three dogs at our young age. I also know that this is everything but the rule. But as we all know, we are quite good at getting out of line.
After the quote Mojo had his performance. He was allowed to pursue his favourite pastime: Putting toys away. Plush toy for plush toy, he put the pile of toys I had scattered in advance back into the box and got a treat from me for every successfully tidied up toy – just as it should be! J The camera team never got bored, because Mojo, Rana and Mateo knew how to keep themselves busy. They played and tussled with each other, did their favourite tricks and showed in an exemplary way how great and carefree such a dog’s life is. „It never gets boring here,“ I heard the camerawoman say. I grinned and replied with a playful indignation, „Definitely not. „
After we talked in the second quote about the social media platform Instagram, how we got there in the first place and what the „Petfluencer“ existence means to us, we went downstairs to the dining room. Now came the part of the shoot that I personally found difficult. I was allowed to talk about Mateo in the third interview: about his origins, his past and how he found his way to us. I had to fight with tears when I reported about the encounter in the shopping center.
…One day Rafael, Mateo and I were shopping at the shopping center. I never took Mateo to the city until then because I know that he polarizes in public. People stare, whisper and point at the little dog man. But that day I was ready for it and yes, somehow I didn’t want to hide Mateo any longer. Actually, he’s just an ordinary dog. Until a strange man decided to give me his opinion without being asked. „Isn’t this getting better?“ he asked out of the blue. I was completely perplexed at first. I soon understood what he meant. „His leg? No, the paw is missing.“ His answer came promptly: „Yes, I know that. But this is not a good solution.“ Something like that, he said. I had to swallow. I didn’t like the direction the conversation was going. „But, as you can see, he’s handling it beautifully.“ He shook his head. What words left his lips afterwards, I neither want to pronounce nor write down. He thought Mateo had no life worth living.
After I had reported about this encounter, tears rolled down my cheek. A situation that I did NOT want. But feelings cannot be turned off. The room was silent. There was a short break for me. We talked about Mateo’s stump and I took off Mateo’s sock for the first time that day and released his stump for the camera. Afterwards we filmed putting on the prosthetic leg.
Then the camera team and the pinched family went outside. This is where the second part of the shoot would take place. Unfortunately Rafael had to go back to work after the first part – which caused the excitement in me to rise again. Arriving at our daily gas round I had to realize that my excitement transferred to the dogs. This in turn led me to concentrate on the dogs and the excitement slowly faded away. After a short time the complete pack was caught. The camera focused on Mateo for a while. Of course it was incredibly interesting how he would run with his prosthetic leg. And as it was usual for Mateo, he ran faster than the wind. Together with Rana he was running through the forest and made it difficult for the camera team to get the two whirlwinds into the picture. The recall was filmed, a few outdoor tricks were added and another little interview was done to finish off. To answer the last question was especially easy.
„What do your dogs mean to you?“
„My dogs mean everything to me. They are my life. I would do anything for them.“
With that an exciting day came to an end.
